Susan M. Lawrence

Susan M. Lawrence was born October 18, 1948, to William and Mavis (Hersrud) Roberts. She passed away at the Billings Clinic in Billings, MT, on Friday, March 6, 2026, after a massive stroke. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1pm, Saturday, March 21, 2026, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Wibaux, MT, with Father Jijo Alappatt officiating. Rite of Committal will follow in the Wibaux Cemetery. Silha Funeral Home of Wibaux has been entrusted with arrangements. Susan was brought up in an educator family which brought on lots of moving around with time from Kenmare, ND, to Reno, NV, and Poplar, MT where she was a high school cheerleader, to Glendora, CA, where she graduated high school and attended a year of college. The family then returned to Beach, ND, and Susan attended Dickinson State College majoring in art. Susan and her brothers would spend summers in Missoula, MT, while their parents attended summer school. Some of her highlights were seeing the World's Fair in New York in 1964, exploring the White House. Driving from California to New York, they saw many sights across the US. While attending DSC in Dickinson, Susan and her girlfriends ventured to the Shamrock in Wibaux where she spotted a handsome cowboy named Gary Lawrence. It was the start of a 53-year adventure. After eloping to Belle Fourche, SD, on April 18, 1969, with best friends, their lives were busy working on ranches. Their baby boy Daniel Garrett was born in 1970 and daughter, Kristin Belle in 73. They finally settled on the Lawrence farm south of Wibaux, where they farmed and ranched until moving to town. They kept the 40 acres to run their gardens until finally down sizing. Susan was very talented whether it was painting portraits and western art, teaching Title I students, baton twirling, cooking, baking, or helping run the lumber yard. Famously known for her baking and cooking, she will be greatly missed by the community and relatives. Susan and Gary loved watching their kids in sports, following them wherever they went, and she would be the first to brag to everyone how well they did and how proud they were. They also loved to socialize with their friends on Friday nights at the local watering holes. Susan enjoyed spoiling her grandkids, Brook and Blane, and later on her great-grandkids, Alexa and Braxtyn. She would shop all year long looking for treasures for all her loved ones. Her love language was giving gifts and cooking for you—never missing a birthday or holiday. Susan eventually became the local “crazy cat lady” after inheriting the neighborhood cats, feeding, watering, doctoring, and cremating her precious felines. Her heart was so big, she couldn’t bury the stray kitties, so she decided to cremate them, because they deserved better. She loved working in her yard, known for one of the most beautiful yards in town. She worked tirelessly on all her flowers and gardens throughout the years. During Christmas, she had one of the most lit up decorated places in town, specializing in the inflatable decorations. She loved Christmas for the lights and also for the gift giving—over doing it every year! She had so much energy and grit, she could outwork an ox. Susan lost her husband Gary on May 7, 2021, after 53 years of marriage, and she lost her son, Daniel on February 22, 2023. She experienced hardest years of her life after their passings, living without the two most precious men ever. She saved her daughter, Kristin, the during the summer of 2023 and spoiled her rotten until the end. Her favorite moments were spent drinking cold beers when her kids and grandkids would stop by. She cherished every visit. She loved visiting with her brothers, Tom, Donald, and Jeff, on the phone and catching up on their families’ lives and always sending them baked goodies on their birthdays. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; son, Daniel; parents, William and Mavis; an infant brother; her brother, John Roberts; sisters-in-law, Carole, Renee, Terri; brothers-in-law, David Brodman, David Lawrence, Wendell Tasker; and her favorite cat, Toby.
