Patty Houck

Glendive, Montana: Patty Houck, age 48, passed away and became our angel on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana and she will be cherished forever. Sorrow has suddenly overwhelmed us at the magnitude of our loss. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Avis Anderson officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements. Patricia “Patty” Kay (Holzemer) Houck was born on December 20, 1964 in Fargo, North Dakota. As a baby she was adopted by Stan and Betty Holzemer. She grew up in Dickinson, North Dakota, where she graduated from Trinity High School with the class of 1983. Patty then attended Dawson Community College in Glendive and later went to Bozeman where she graduated from Montana State University with a degree in psychology. She met Donald (Don) Houck at Patterson Lake in Dickinson and immediately knew he was the one for her. Patty married Don, her soul mate, on June 23, 1989. They made their life together in Glendive. Their marriage was blessed with first a son, Michael and then a beautiful daughter, Rachael. Patty was especially proud of her children and treasured the time they shared. She enjoyed traveling with her kids loved watching them as they grew to love the variety of life as much as she did. She was involved with all of their sports and activities and she particularly loved spending “lake time” at the family cabin in Dickinson. Patty was known for her hard work. She started working at Hardee’s when she was fourteen years old and she never slowed down from there. While attending college, she worked at Hardee’s and as an eye care specialist at Duling Optical. After graduation she moved to Glendive where for years she worked at Eastmont, Glendive Medical Center and with the Special Olympics Program. She also managed the local Taco Johns and Hardee’s. Her love for animals inspired her and Don to start a pet store, The Critter Shack. They earned respect as business owners for the quality of animal care and services they provided. Patty later became an EMT for the Dawson County Ambulance Service. She and Don were instrumental in getting the Makoshika Promotions Company started and she was a qualified pyrotechnician for fireworks. She could always be found at the bump-n-runs helping somewhere. Patty took in the challenge of ownership of the Dairy Queen (later re-named Planet Eat and Treat). For the next twelve years she made people happy with hot eats and cool treats. She then moved on to the adventure as owner and operator of Maddhatters Family Restaurant where she took such pride in her employees and the improvements to the business. Patty was also responsible for the care of her mother, Betty and brother, Gordy of Dickinson. She recently moved them to Glendive so she could see to their needs on a regular basis. Patty always loved starting new projects. She would jump in with both feet and a smile as she researched and figured it out as she went. She had many collections she treasured and many hobbies she treasured. She was a very talented artist in many areas. Besides crafts and painting, she also created jewelry, wood burning art, and clay sculptures. She made most of the gifts she gave to family and friends. She had a special way with people and animals. She loved deeply, laughed often, and was always wanting to help others anyway she could. She always looked forward to traveling and adventures. Patty was amazed with nature and saw beauty everywhere. Collecting Agates on the Yellowstone River was her latest enjoyment in life. Patty was loved by many and an inspiration to those who knew her. Patty is survived by her husband Don Houck of Glendive; her son, Michael Houck age 22 and daughter, Rachael Houck age 19; mother, Betty Holzemer; brother, Gordon “Gordy” Holzemer; Dean and Donna Houck, whom were more like parents than in-laws, all of Glendive; sister-in-law, Deana (Dave) Allison of Glendive; David (Shannon) Houck of Missoula, Montana; two nephews, Daniel and Derek Allison and many other close family members and friends that gave extra meaning to her life. A love shared is never lost; we will meet again someday in heaven! In Lieu of flowers a fund will be established for a memorial yet to be determined.
