GLENDIVE, MONTANA: Marjorie L. Lukanitsch, 90, of Glendive, died Sunday, August 23, 2009, at the Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., in the chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive. A Vigil service will be held in the chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Glendive on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 6:30 P.M. with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glendive with Father Joseph Ponessa officiating. Private family Interment will be held at a later date at the Calvary Cemetery in Jamestown, North Dakota. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements. Marjorie was born on February 1, 1919 in Jamestown, North Dakota, the second child and first daughter of Roy L. and Christine (Sonnek) Torrey. Marjorie graduated from Eldridge High School in 1936, and went on to attend Jamestown College, where she graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Marjorie later earned a Master's degree from the University of Montana, formerly Eastern Montana College, in Billings. In 1943, Marjorie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, Women's reserve, and was honorably discharged in 1943. On June 19, 1956, Marjorie married Roy J. Lukanitsch in Jamestown. Roy preceded her in death in 1972. After the war, she taught in Dickinson, North Dakota and Fort Morgan, Colorado. She then came to Glendive, Montana, where she taught high school for 28 years. Marjorie retired in 1977, at which time she became employed with ERA Kopp Realty and sold real estate for over eight years. Among Marjorie's many interests were reading, gardening, art and musical events, dramatic events, playing cards and dancing when she was young. She enjoyed traveling in the United States and in England, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal, where her interests were in ancient history, art and architecture. Marjorie was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish, the Glendive garden club and Dawson County arts unlimited. She was one of the founding members of "Friends of the Library" and "Friends of Makoshika." She volunteered and contributed to various other community groups and committees. She was a concerned environmentalist and a supporter of the Audubon Society, the Nature Conservancy, and the National Wildlife Federation. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; a half-sister, Pearl Lusk; one sister, Eleanor Torrey; three brothers, Clifford, Robert and Gene. Marjorie is survived by a sister, Lorraine Kiernan of Fargo, North Dakota; her nephews, Michael Kiernan and his wife Maureen of West Fargo, North Dakota; Clifford Torrey and his wife Toni of Atascadero, California; William Torrey and his wife, Liz of Atascadero, California; her nieces, Mary Kay Flowers and her husband Woodrow of New York City, New York; Barbara Quiggle and her husband John of Honduras; Paula Cyman and her husband Bob of Jamul, California; Michele and her husband Chris Hyink of Portland, Oregon; Grand nieces, Erin Johnson and her husband Mike of Shakopee, Minnesota; Kate Bryant and her husband Mike of West Fargo; a grand nephew, Kelly Kiernan and his wife Kathryn of Elko, Minnesota; her half-sister's children, Janet Hendrikson of Eugene, Oregon; Patricia Noble of Fresno, California; Beverly Husbands of Bakersfield, California; Priscilla Lees and her husband of Long Beach, California; Kathy Baumgartner and her husband of Eugene, Oregon; Robert Lusk of Portland Oregon.
