Gary Gregory Maus

Gary Gregory Maus, age 76 of Golva, North Dakota passed away peacefully at Country House in Dickinson on Monday, August 17, 2026 with his family by his side. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Vigil service beginning at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 21, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Golva. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Golva. Rite of Committal will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Golva. Silha Funeral Home of Beach, North Dakota has been entrusted with the arrangements. Gary was born to Gregory and Geraldine (Schmeling) Maus on November 1, 1949. He has one sister, Gwenda of Beach, ND. He attended grade school and high school in Golva, graduating with the class of 1967. He attended some college at Dickinson State College, but preferred being with cattle. He enjoyed working at Schnell’s Livestock for a few years. He was drafted and went into the National Guard for a short time but was released when his father got cancer. Gary married Brenda Finneman on September 7, 1974 and to this union three children were born. Leon passed away at birth, Nicole was born in 1976 and Grant was born in 1981. He enjoyed going to basketball games and looked forward to every game and also when the grandkids played any sports. Gary and Brenda enjoyed going to music concerts, seeing many music artists when it worked around their chore schedule. They purchased milk cows to build their herd until they started raising their own. Gary did not like milking cows, but he enjoyed doing the feeding. They purchased 25 range cows from the Nelson Ranch and built their herd to 180 range cows. This got to be too much calving in the corrals so slowly they started to downsize. The milk cows were sold in the year 2000. However, Gary continued having range cattle and purchased many Holstein steers to help pay for land payments. Gary did carpenter work and enjoyed every bit of that. Eventually Gary and Ron Zachmann formed Prairie Lumber Company. He totally loved being in the lumberyard and visiting and meeting new people. He loved shaking dice and playing pinochle. He and Brenda enjoyed dancing. He enjoyed going to Deadwood once in a while. He enjoyed his cattle and selling the steers in the fall was a highlight, or going to bull sales in the winter and spring. He had a special cat named Buster that waited for him to come to the door at night so the cat could sit in his lap. Gary served on the Township Board, the Golva Elevator Board and the North Dakota Lumberman’s Association and joined a men’s bowling team on Monday nights during the winter months. He joined the Catholic Church in 2011 and was very happy about that. He never missed Mass on weekends. Gary suffered a brain bleed, in April 2021, after having a severe headache and was air ambulanced to Fargo. He was released the next day. He suffered a minor stroke and then dementia set in. It became very hard to do the things he used to do. Gary was preceded in death by a son Leon, his grandparents, his father and mother and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; his daughter, Nicole (Brent) Davidson; his son Grant Maus; six grandchildren, Brooke (Zach) Peterson, Breenna Kemnitz (Jeff), Brannon (Emily) Davidson, Brynn Davidson, Julianne Maus and Meadow VanVleet; six great grandchildren, Brezlyn and Carstyn Wilson, Zarek and Zayvin Peterson, Asher Kemnitz and Cecelia Davidson; one sister, Gwenda (Alan) Miller of Beach and numerous nieces and nephews and close family friends, Teresa VanVleet and Emma Ford.
