Harry Zachmann

Harry J Zachmann, age 76, a man devoted to faith, family, and friends, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on Valentine’s Day at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Mountain Time in the Chapel of the Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach, North Dakota. A Prayer Service will be held Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. Mountain Time at St. John’s Catholic Church in Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Golva, North Dakota on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. Mountain Time. Interment with Father Russell Kovash officiating will follow at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Golva. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach is entrusted with arrangements. Harry, the youngest, was born in Saint Michael, Minnesota to Benno and Bernadine (Wey) Zachmann on May 30, 1934 at the family farm. He joined his sisters, Lauretta, and Sister Alice SSND, and his brothers, Tony, Paul, Carl, and Frank. He went to school through the 8th grade at Saint Michael Parochial School. He continued his education in the school of life, acquiring a “BS” degree. In 1953, he came to North Dakota to assist his uncle in farming and fell in love with the land and wide open spaces. In the summer of 1953 he met the love of his life, Elaine (Schmitz), at a wedding dance at the Alpha Hall. They were married on June 6, 1956 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Golva. Their marriage was blessed with eight children. In the early years, he provided for his family by purchasing a farm east of Golva and working as a janitor of the Golva School system. He began his career in the machinery business working at McCaskey Implement, an Allis Chalmers Dealership in Beach. Harry purchased the dealership in 1967. Starting with two employees, West Plains Implement began. After 42 years, he retired when he was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2009. He was very dedicated to his employees, customers, community, and business associates, and thoroughly enjoyed his work. In Harry’s “retirement”, he would continue to frequent West Plains to roll dice, play cards and share a joke or many a story. This is where he continued to use his “BS” degree to the fullest! In addition to his work, Harry had a great passion for antiques. From old cars to an old butter churn, he loved to search for antique treasures. He couldn’t go by a junkyard without wondering what he might find there. This hobby led to an antique auction each year for many years. His auctions became very wide spread and Harry made many new friends. It became like a family reunion. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elaine; all of his children, Dan (Sheila) of Beach, Ron (Sherry) of Beach, Jo (Dan) Buchholz of Beach, Bern (Mary) of Beach, LaDonna (Terry) Egan of Beach, Rita (Jeff) Baranick of Beulah North Dakota, Mary (Ryan) Farstveet of Bismarck, and Andy (Carrie) Zachmann of Beach; 26 grandchildren; 12 great-grand children; 3 brothers, Paul, Carl, and Frank; a sister, Sister Alice SSND; and host of relatives; and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benno and Bernadine Zachmann,; his brother, Tony; and his sister, Lauretta. His granddaughter, Savannah and other angelic infants. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Building Fund. As you Rest in Peace, know that we will meet again. (Auf Wiedersehen)
