She grew up on a share croppers peanut and cotton farm along with four sisters and five brothers. Susie attended Isle of Wight High School until December of 1946 when she met and married Harold W. Avens in January of 1947. In April, they moved to Pleasant Lake, North Dakota, to help on the family farm. A couple years later, they moved to Billings, Montana, when Harold was transferred to Glendive, working for Houch Transport. Her first job was in 1953 for Albreigt Café followed by Derrick Café, N.P. Beanery Bairs, and GMC Cafeteria, either waiting tables or cooking. Susie met and married Robert Sovereign in a ceremony held at the Glendive Extended Care Nursing Home in 1980 with residents as witnesses. They moved to Sidney where she worked at Richland Homes until moving to Anaconda to take care of Bob’s parents. With their passing, they moved back to Glendive. Susie’s first love was caring for her five children, and country music that began with the Grand Ole Opry on the radio and church choir. She was a collector of country/western music – records, CD’s, and cassettes. She also collected teapots, and crocheted dresses for bed dolls to give away to the grandkids. Susie loved to cook and bake for her family. She volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary’s Kitchen Band, made popcorn at Extended Care, and worked for 17 years at the “Attic.” She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters Ruth Whitman, Dorothy Brown, Mildred Freeman, and Irene Barnes/Elliot; brothers Frank Brown, Charles Brown, George Brown, Clarence Brown, and William Brown; husband of 17 years Robert Sovereign (1998). She is survived by two daughters, Sharon (Les) Avens/Widman of Glendive, MT, and Mardella (Roy) Kelm of Magazine, AR; three sons, Richard Avens of Vancouver, WA, Harold Avens Jr., and Jeffrey Avens both of Glendive; grandchildren Jeremy (Nancy) Avens of Lodi, CA, Corey Avens of Glendive, Jennifer (Sean) Avens of Vancouver, Charles (Misty) Kelm of Gentry, AR, and Zachary Kelm of Magazine; great-grandchildren Brittany Brown, Christapher Dallas, Nicholas Dallas, twins William and Brooklynn Kelm, Cooper Kelm, Amberlyn and Raiden Kelm; one step great-granddaughter Chasity (Brendin) Palacios; one great-great grandson Jackson Dallas; sister-in-laws Gwen (George) Brown of Partsmouth, VA, and Luella (Edward) Avens.
